MAURICE CALKA DESIGN

Maurice Calka 1921 —1999
Sculptor, urban planner, designer
THE SCULPTOR DESIGNER
Maurice Calka's forays into furniture and object design are as rare as they are spectacular, reflecting the originality and audacity of his approach. This talented sculptor, whose career extends well beyond the traditional boundaries of his art, sees design as a form of creative exploration
It is also a fertile ground for Calka to experiment. Through his furniture and object creations, he plays with shapes, materials and textures, pushing the boundaries of functionality to infuse them with a unique artistic dimension. Each piece then becomes a sculpture in itself, an extension of his work as a visual artist, merging art and everyday utility. This constant dialogue between art and design testifies to Maurice Calka's profound reflection on how aesthetics can transform our environment and enrich our daily lives.
Apart from furniture, we know less about Maurice Calka's other creations, which are all testimonies to his insatiable exploratory curiosity: a Renault 5 convertible, logos, invention patents...

THE BOOMERANG DESK
AN ICONIC OBJECT
The Boomerang is an iconic piece that met with immediate success upon its appearance. Presented as a prototype on the Leleu-Deshays stand at SICOB 1969, this futuristic-looking desk quickly captured attention. It can be found at Électricité de France, Solvay, and the Maison de la culture in Rennes. Subsequently, this modern icon was presented in several prestigious exhibitions, including Les Années pop in 2001 at the Centre Pompidou.
It is thanks to works like the Boomerang that Maurice Calka remains more recognized today as a designer than as a sculptor, a distinction marked by the lasting impact of this legendary creation.

The prototype was made in plaster like a sculptor's original before the various prints. This desk is distinguished by its organic, flowing forms, creating a balance between functionality and aestheticism.
The desk is both minimalist and imposing. Its uniform, unadorned surfaces, combined with the absence of visible joints, give the impression that the piece of furniture is a homogeneous entity, born from a single block of material.
The digitization scrupulously respects the organic form born of the Artist's hand.
